The club was thought of by a group of four friends who began running regularly together. Their names are John Pape (deceased), Ben Map, Geoff Pitock and Steve Steer - the only remaining founder member who is still a member of the club.
In February 1986 they formed the club Sittingbourne Striders and registered with the Kent and South East Athletic Associations. Since it’s beginning the membership has increased to the current level of approximately 80.
Their aim was to create a road running club for members with all levels of ability and to make running enjoyable as well as competitive.
Although the club was originally intended for road running, it has taken part in the Today's Runner Cross Country League for 12 years.
We run our own popular 10-mile race in October and also have a strong social calendar.
Your questions answered!
Where can I find you?
We meet on Tuesday nights at 8.00pm at the UK Paper clubhouse in Gore Court in Sittingbourne.
On Thursday evenings we meet at the same venue at 5.30pm
Sunday mornings we meet outside the main gates of the Sittingbourne Community College at 8.00am
What training do you do?
On Tuesday evenings we do approx 6 miles. We have a good mix of all standards from beginners to more experienced runners. There is always somebody to welcome new members and keep them company.
On Thursdays there is a more leisurely run of approx 5 miles. This is ideal for the slower paced runners and beginners.
On Sundays we do our main long run of the week. This will range from 10 to 20 miles depending upon the training schedules at the time.
The club also actively competes in local races and also a cross country league.
Can I turn up or do I have to join first?
You are welcome to just turn up and introduce yourself at any club run or contact us via our web site.
I am only looking to train for the Virgin London Marathon, how will I find others to train with?
We always have 15 to 20 runners training for the London Marathon so there will be somebody to train with and map progress with. We are a very friendly and welcoming group who will make you feel at home.
