Born on the back of the running boom of the early eighties when the London Marathon was attracting new participants to the sport, the Club was set up to provide a sociable gathering of runners for a modest Tuesday night run. From the very outset it has been a friendly Club with very few rules and entry requirements. No changing facilities to offer, just people meeting under a lamppost every week. We are still attracting new members. Numbers are much larger than they were a few years ago with around 100 runners on a Tuesday but the Club still provides a good, friendly running experience to its over 200 members. The quality of running, measured by performance times in events, has improved quite considerably over the last few years. That being said, our main aim is simply to provide safe, interesting and challenging running, together with advice and most importantly companionship whenever the Club meets.
Your questions answered!
Where can I find you?
Our main meeting is on Tuesday at 8:00 next to the Buff Orpington pub in Crescent Way, off Sevenoaks Road, Orpington.
For details of where and when we meet please see our website.
What training do you do?
On Tuesday we split into about 6 different groups with varied distance and pace to suit differing needs. Groups will offer 9-12 miles at a good pace down to 3-4 miles at beginners pace. Once a month in winter we arrange a handicap “race” to liven things up a bit.
A smaller group meet on Thursday at 7.30 at the Buff for a 6-7 mile run.
Sunday offers a cross country stamina building session, the time and distance extending as fitness develops.
A structured training is available on Saturday morning.
In addition groups will get together for alternative sessions.
Can I turn up or do I have to join first?
We much prefer runners to come and run with us and join later if they like it, over 70 newcomers have decided to join in the last year. We have members of all ages from 16 – 70+, a good gender mix and a wide range of abilities.
I am only looking to train for the Virgin London Marathon, how will I find others to train with?
We always have a couple of dozen people running in the Virgin London Marathon with times from 3h15m to over 5 hours. In addition we have others who have done so in the past and they are all willing to share experience with first timers. We will help to put you in touch with other runners of similar ability who are training for the marathon.
