We are a friendly and sociable group of runners determined to keep fit and making running fun. We were founded in 1989 and have been pounding the streets of Marlow and the riverbanks of the Thames ever since. We have over 150 members of all ages and abilities so we’re sure to have someone who runs at your pace. Some of our runners are highly competitive and love the challenge of racing as often as possible, while others seek nothing more gruelling than a steady plod and a sociable chat on route – it’s up to you. For those who like to compete, we nominate around 20 local races each year as club events. These include road races, a closed summer 5K series and a winter Cross Country league. Members score points in each event they enter and a points table for the various categories is maintained throughout the year with club trophies for the winners. If you’re totally new to running or recovering from an injury, we also have an informal walking group – known as the Penguins. For many of us, making new friends and catching up with old ones is as important as running itself and you’ll always be welcome in the clubhouse bar after evening training runs. Various social events are organised throughout the year and on the first Thursday evening of every month there is always a social run or walk followed by supper at the clubhouse.
Your questions answered!
Where can I find you?
We meet at Marlow Sports Club on Tuesday and Thursday evenings at 7.00pm and on Sunday mornings at 9.00am.
What training do you do?
Informal groups undertake various routes between 4 and 10 miles through the streets of Marlow in the winter. Alternatively, optional interval sessions and hill work are organised on Thursday evenings. In the summer, we take advantage of the light nights and the attractive countryside around Marlow to head off along the riverbank, through the woods and into the Chiltern Hills. Although not as well attended as our evening sessions, some members meet on Sunday mornings for longer runs through the countryside.
Can I turn up or do I have to join first?
Potential new members are welcome to come along for a few of our regular training runs to take a test drive. There’s no pressure to join immediately. However, you may only enter our club events if you are a member. When ready to join you can download an application form from our website or collect one from the club.
I am only looking to train for the Virgin London Marathon, how will I find others to train with?
We normally have 6-8 runners in the London Marathon whose pace varies from 3 to 5 hours. We will introduce you to people of similar ability and training for the Virgin London Marathon. You can join the “10-mile club” on Tuesday evenings which provides an opportunity to discuss your training regime and benefit from the advice of one of our experienced marathon runners. Many members decide to meet up and train with each other outside club nights.
