Handy Cross Runners

High Wycombe
Buckinghamshire

We were formed nearly 30 years ago just before the very first London Marathon and we are an enthusiastic group of people who love running and enjoy the company of other runners. We think we have a great balance between all types of runners: fast and slow; old and young; male and female; experienced and newcomers. Those of us who joined quite recently have found it a very friendly atmosphere. We have plenty of activities to suit all tastes. Currently we have nearly 200 paid up members.

Your questions answered!

Where can I find you?

We meet in the bar at the Judo Centre on Tuesday and Thursday evenings at 7:00pm, and on Sunday mornings in the entrance lobby at 9:00am. On Wednesday evenings we meet at the athletics track at Wycombe Sports Centre at 7:00pm.

What training do you do?

Members can take part in structured training sessions. These sessions are suitable for all standards of runners and include a warm up, followed by stretching exercises, mobility and strength drills, prior to the actual training efforts which take the form of intervals/repetitions or hill training. Beginning runners are carefully supervised to ensure that they build up their speed and distance gradually without incurring any injuries. Regular Time Trials are held to allow members to monitor their performance. Alternatively they can join in one of our group runs of varying lengths. In summer we take the opportunity of getting off road as much as possible so we can explore some of the many public footpaths that we have in this area. In winter we have several routes along well-lit streets. As a newcomer to the club we will make sure you that you have good company to run with at a similar pace to your own, and over a distance that you feel you can handle. There are several people who are only too pleased to run with new members (as long as the pace is not too fast for them) until they get established within the club. These groups are very informal, and after a while you will soon get to know the people who are of a similar standard to your own.

Can I turn up or do I have to join first?

Please feel free to come and run with us, member or not. We welcome runners of all ages, abilities and there is no pressure to join.

I am only looking to train for the Virgin London Marathon, how will I find others to train with?

We always have 10 or so runners in the London Marathon whose pace varies from 2hr 40m to over 5 hours.
