Claremont Road Runners

We are a friendly running club based in Newcastle City Centre. We have a wealth of experience across all age categories and plenty of people willing to pass on advice about, and offer support for, road, cross country, and fell runs and races.

In 2008 our members competed in at least eight different marathons. Our fastest marathon runner in 2008 ran 3.17 and our slowest ran 4.51.

We ask that anyone joining the club or coming for a trial period has the health, fitness and ability to run/jog for approximately one hour, (otherwise you will have difficulty integrating into existing training packs).

Your questions answered!

Where can I find you?

At the University of Northumbria sports centre in the middle of Newcastle upon Tyne. Directions are on our website. We meet on Monday and Wednesday nights at 5.45pm to start running at 6.00pm.

What training do you do?

On Monday we do a one hour continuous run based on packs- a slow pack sets off first, followed by a medium and then a fast pack. All the packs follow the same route.

For those new to running, we have an ‘Improver’s Group’ which goes at the pace of the slowest member, over a route and a distance that suits the group members.

On Wednesday there are usually fewer runners and we divide into two groups. One group does a steady run (approximately one hour at, say, 9 min/mile), the other does approximately one hour of intervals. This group is suitable for a wide range of abilities because at the end of each ‘effort’ (e.g. half a mile flat out) all of the runners regroup for a brief recovery.

Can I turn up or do I have to join first?

If you are interested, you are very welcome to come and run with us a few times before deciding whether or not to join up. The annual subscriptions are £30 for waged, £20 for students and the unwaged. This gets you the free use of all changing and shower facilities at Northumbria on Club Nights as well as discounts on entries to races.

If you contact us to say you are coming, we can look out for you and tell you how to gain access to the Sports Centre.

I am only looking to train for the Virgin London Marathon, how will I find others to train with?

At the club you may meet others who live near you and can arrange to run with them at other times, for example on a Sunday. In the winter we often have runners training in groups over longer distances to prepare for various marathons.
